Celebrity Cruises made history within the company for hosting its first legal same-sex marriage at sea. The couple, Francisco Vargas and Benjamin Gray, had an intimate ceremony with their friends and family aboard the Celebrity Equinox on January 29 with the ship’s captain, Dimitrios Manetas, officiating the wedding.
Celebrity has captain-led ceremonies called the Nautical Nuptials at Sea package that allows same-sex couple’s to book live music, photography, cake, Champagne, and other special surprises.
“When we heard Celebrity Cruises was celebrating equality and embracing our community, we wanted to be a part of it… We are grateful for the outpouring of support from our Cruise Planners family and hope our story brings strength for others in the LGBTQ+ community to confidently love whoever they choose,” the couple said.
This is the first time that Celebrity hosted a same-sex marriage at sea because the company is based in Malta. It was only in October that a referendum in Malta opened the door for same-sex marriage.
Celebrity Cruises’ President and Chief Executive Lisa Lutoff-Perlo said: “Together we are paving the way for couples around the world to know that their love and commitment is to be celebrated equally, and that everyone is welcome on board a Celebrity cruise.”
