Chinese Social Platform Weibo Bans ‘Gay’

With some 392 million monthly users, China’s most popular social-media platform, Weibo, said that it will be removing posts that contain both violent and LGBT-related content in an effort to “clean up” the platform. The website will be removing pictures, cartoons, and texts in an apparent bid to comply with new Chinese cyber-security calls for data surveillance. Some of the website’s users have begun protesting the move by using the hashtag “I am Gay.”

“I am gay and I’m proud, even if I get taken down there are tens of millions like me!,” said one poster, who used the handle “rou wan xiong xiong xiong xiong” and posted a photo of himself.
