A university student has filed a  lawsuit against China’s Ministry of Education over the school’s textbooks that tell students that being gay people have “mental or physical issues” and need to be healed.” Twenty-one-year-old Chen Qiuyan filed the case on August 14 saying that the textbooks “demonize” the lesbian and gay community. A court in Beijing is expected to hear the case.

“I was terrified when reading the books. What would my friends and classmates think of me if they read them?” she questioned after reading the textbooks and still confused by her own sexuality. Since then, Qiuyan has come out to her friends and families and hopes her quest to remove the language from these outdated textbooks will serve a small part in fighting the stigma against the LGB community in China.
