An instant-coffee brand perked up more than just the mind after several men complained that it gave them unwanted erections. “New of Kopi Jantan Tradisional Natural Herbs Coffee” was originally marketed as a male-enhancement product, but was bought by unknowing shoppers who picked it up in their supermarkets. The FDA wasn’t aware of all of its ingredients until complaints began filing in. It contained desmethyl carbodenafil, which is, in essence, Viagra.
The company, called Bestherbs Coffee LLC, voluntarily recalled the coffee after the FDA said that the chemical could cause problems paired with nitrates and cause high-blood pressure, heart disease, and complicate diabetes.
If that wasn’t enough, the product also contained milk, which wasn’t listed as an ingredient.
The man who created the coffee was inspired by his travels throughout Malaysia. “There are whole streets of it, like tequila in Mexico,” he told the Washington Post.
