Gay Reverend Elected to East Austin School Board Shocks Voters

In East Austin, a seat at the AISD District 2 school board has the community questioning whether or not a candidate should have revealed his sexuality during the hotly contested race. The campaign put Reverend Jayme Mathias against incumbent Sam Guzman. It wasn’t until after Reverend Mathias won the race that he revealed in an interview that he was gay—making him the first openly gay person to occupy the seat. “I thought that serving on the school board was all about serving our students and their families,” the newly elected board member said. Unfortunately, his coming out has those who voted for him feeling betrayed—hindering his ability to begin helping the community. “It’s something that I didn’t feel the need to reveal,” explained Mathias. “It’s part of who I am, an important part of who I am, but it’s not all of who I am.” [Kvue]
