The Catholic, South American country of Colombia officially will recognize gay and lesbian marriages after the top court found no constitutional hurdles to allow marriage equality.  Six of the court’s nine judges approved the ruling by declaring “all people are free to choose independently to start a family in keeping with their sexual orientation…receiving equal treatment under the constitution and the law.”

Colombia already had civil unions in place, offering nearly all the same benefits of opposite-sex couples, and couples’ unions will be officially recognized as marriages. [BBC]
