Landmark Lebanese Court Rules in Favor of Decriminalizing Gay Rights

Lebanon has moved one step closer to legalizing homosexuality. Judge Rabih Maalouf ruled that “homosexuality is a personal choice, and not a punishable offense.” Thus, with this logic, the judge cited Article 183 that reads: “An act undertaken in exercise of a right without abuse shall not be regarded as an offense.” While Lebanon has a long way to go for equality, it does signal a shift in views.

Homosexuality is still illegal in the country (because of Article 534 that prohibits same-sex relations), but the judge’s ruling could be used for future cases. [GSN]
