Watching the Olympics every two years is a global tradition, but for this year’s Winter Olympics many LGBT members and supporters are expected to tune out due to Russia’s anti-gay “propaganda law.” One LGBT group, however, has come up with an idea that may make you feel not so guilty watching. Truth Wins Out, an organization that fights against anti-gay extremism, has launched a petition to have NBC assign openly gay host Rachel Maddow as a Human Rights Correspondent to cover the Olympics. “The spotlight can be harsh, but Russia specifically asked for it when they submitted a bid and agreed to host the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi,” said Truth Wins Out Executive Director Wayne Besen. “People around the world want to watch and support the Olympics, but they want to do so with a clear conscience. Make a difference, NBC, by adding Rachel Maddow to the Olympic coverage as a special Human Rights Correspondent.” Sending a gay journalist will certainly make a statement to fans, but the International Olympic Committee says it has received pledges from Russian lawmakers that the “propaganda law” will not apply to athletes, fans, or media members.  [ThinkProgress]
