Jess Herbst Becomes First Texas Transgender Mayor

When election time came around in New Hope, Texas, the current mayor was reelected, but sadly had suffered a heart attack and passed away a few days after. On May 2016, the position of mayor went to Jeff Herbst, who has now transitioned to Jess Herbst and living as her true self.

Two years before Jeff Herbst was appointed to his position, Herbst began hormone-replacement therapy. With the support of her wife, daughters, and son-in-law, the transition became easier. In a letter posted on NewHopetx.com, the new mayor has explained that she is transgender, and reintroduced herself as Jess Herbst.

“As your Mayor I must tell you about something that has been with me since my earliest memories. I am Transgender. Two years ago, with the support of my wife, daughters and son-in-law, I began Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). At the time, I did not imagine I would hold the Mayors position, but here I am.”

The Mayor’s blog, where she keeps an account of her transition, she’s railed against a proposed anti-LGBT bathroom bill that is being pushed forward this legislative period by Texas Lt Gov Dan Patrick who plans to put forth Senate Bill 6.

Hopefully Major Jess can use her klout to help raise awareness and stop these harmful laws from being [GSN]
