MTV has requested the attendance of transgender military service members from the Pentagon, according to CNN. Pentagon Spokesman Lt. Col. Paul Haverstick said that the Department of Defense is “… reviewing the parameters of the request.” Many active duty troops have heavy restrictions on high-profiled events, particularly when it comes to events aimed at making a political statement.
“MTV has invited transgender members of the US armed forces to the 2017 Video Music Awards and we would be honored if they could attend,” said Chris McCarthy, president of MTV. “Any patriot who is putting their own life at risk to fight for our freedom and stands for equality is a hero at MTV, and to young people everywhere.”
Trump has moved forward with his Twitter-sourced policy that would fire and ban transgender men and women from serving in the military. This week the White House sent policy guidance to the Pentagon on how to legally proceed with banning an entire group of people.
