Defense Secretary Ash Carter said that gays and lesbians will be protected from discrimination by the same equal opportunity policy that currently protects other service members—the announcement was made yesterday at the Pentagon’s LGBT Pride event. Now, gay and lesbian troops who feel that they have been discriminated against because of the orientation will get a full investigation by the Military Equal Opportunity program. The MEO handles cases that involve complaints based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Previously, gay and lesbian service members were required to register discrimination complaints with inspector general offices.
