New York Attorney General Confirms Protections of Transgender Students

“In New York City, it’s illegal to discriminate on the basis of gender identity and gender expression in the workplace, in public spaces, and in housing,” according a commission’s factsheet. “The NYC Commission on Human Rights is committed to ensuring that transgender and gender non-conforming New Yorkers are treated with dignity and respect and without threat of discrimination or harassment.” Now, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has said that school personnel must address students by the gender pronoun for which they identity

He said that state school officials have “the ongoing obligation … to protect [all students’] rights under state and federal law.”

“Over and over again, the Trump administration has made clear its disdain for the basic rights of transgender Americans,” Schneiderman said. “Regardless of what happens in Washington, the law remains the law in New York — and school districts have independent duties to protect transgender students from discrimination and harassment when they go to school.”
