One of Japan’s Largest City’s to Allow Gay and Lesbian Marriage

Fukuoka Mayor Soichiro Takashima made the announcement that the prefecture will be the latest to allow gay and lesbian marriage. Fukuoka is the capital of the Japanese island of Kyushu, and it is one of the largest cities in the country.
The municipal government introduced the “oath system” to allow the partnerships. The partnerships will begin April 1.

“I will consider the introduction of a support framework for sexual minorities that includes a partnership system, with the intention of creating a more inclusive society that recognizes diversity,” said Mayor Takashima in The Mainichi.

Fukuoka is the second municipality after Sapporo to have same-sex partnerships, with two prefectures in Tokyo also allowing gay partnerships.
