Series About the First Modern-Lesbian Anne Lister Casts Lead Role

BAFTA-winning actress Suranne Jones (Doctor Foster) has been cast in the upcoming BBC and HBO produced show Gentlemen Jack about the reportedly first “modern” lesbian Anne Lister, according to Pink News. The show is being created, written, and directed by Sally Wainwright.

The series will chronicle Lister’s life around the year 1832 when after returning to her home in Halifax she tries to bring to restore her old family hall. In that time women were expected to marry rich but she refused and instead courted heiress, Ann Walker.

Lister was featured in a BBC2 film in 2012 called The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister.
