Governor Alejandro García Padilla signed into law civil rights legislation that finally provides sweeping discrimination protections for LGBT people and their families and protects same-sex couples under Puerto Rico’s domestic violence law. The Puerto Rican Legislature yesterday finished its legislative process by approving these two bills. According to the AP: “The original measure would have also banned discrimination in commercial transactions, property rentals, public transportation and other circumstances. Those clauses were removed after heavy opposition by religious groups.” [NGLTF]
