Transgender Indian Advertisement Stirs Emotions and Controversy

An advertisement that aired in India is stirring up major controversy, but is also bringing transgender issues to the forefront. The advertisement, which has accumulated nearly ten million views on YouTube, tells the story of Gayatri, a young orphan girl who was adopted by a transgender woman. The three-minute ad, created by Vicks, doesn’t reveal that the girl’s mother is transgender until the end of the video. Instead, most of the story centers around what a great mother she is. The mother, Gauri Sawant, is a 37-year-old transgender activist who is fighting for the right of transgender people to adopt children. The ad shows us the power of relationships and motherhood—a role that isn’t defined by our conventional gender standards.
