Two Men Reportedly Killed in Haitian Anti-gay Protest

More than 1,000 people took to the streets on Friday to protest homosexuality and a proposal to legalize same-sex marriage in Haiti. Anti-gay placards were carried by protestors, as they chanted songs threatening to burn down parliament if same-sex marriage were to be legalized. A Haitian gay-rights group has announced plans to submit a proposal for the legalization of same-sex marriage in Haiti.

According to one source, several religious groups organized the protest, including the Haitian Coalition of Religious and Moral Organizations. A report from another source states that two assumed homosexuals were murdered at the protest.

Reports from sources in Haiti say that individuals involved in the protest were armed with knives, sticks, blocks, and other objects, when they attacked several people. The two men, who were accused of being gay, were beaten to death on Jean Jacques Dessalines Boulevard, at the Iron Market, at about 1 P.M. Reports indicate that their bodies were still lying on the ground at 4 P.M. [JMG]
