The United Nations has declared May 17, 2017 the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOT). UN Free and Equal—the UN’s campaign for worldwide LGBTQ equality—has partnered with New York’s Ali Forney Center (AFC), the country’s largest organization dedicated to homeless LGBTQ youth, on a video showcasing the perils of LGBTQ youth homelessness.
The video, featuring a transgender homeless youth enrolled in the Ali Forney Center, will be released in the five official languages of the United Nations and appear as part of a UN in Action initiative later in May. This collaboration tells the story of this client’s outing to his family and the tumultuous aftermath that led him to seek services at the Ali Forney Center. The center’s Executive Director Carl Siciliano also speaks about the events that led to AFC’s founding, as well as why the center’s services are more crucial today than ever before.
