With diving accolades under his belt, a boyish face, and a body that makes us wish our parents made us stick with swimming, Aidan Faminoff isn’t your average college freshman. The British Columbia native, though, did share with Outsports his recent coming out story—one we can all relate to—and a transformative moment in which he danced around a flight with his teammates to “YMCA.”
Faminoff knew he was gay from a young age, and found solace in diving. “I found relief in going to dive practice every day after school. I was escaping being with the “guys,” but also I was still hiding my true self. Diving was a way to get my mind off of all the emotions and feelings of not expressing who I really was. It was an escape for a couple of hours during the day, and my mind would rest while I focused on throwing myself off a 33-foot-high platform.”
In his senior year he was able to come out to his openly bisexual friend, who, like many of us experienced when coming out, knew the whole time.
