Fernwood Elementary School in Chicago has cancelled plans for a “Christian” haunted house that would have included a horrific recreation of the Orlando Pulse shooting.
The event description for “The Room: A Journey to Hell” had read, “You will walk in 10 Rooms and encounter individuals who will make choices. The choice is life or death; sin or salvation; heaven or hell. The scenes will be action-packed, real and jaw dropping.”
After a violent backlash and public outcry, Michael Passman from the Chicago Public System announced that the event had been cancelled, saying, “The event organizers mischaracterized the true content of the event, and we did not approve any association with the activities the organizers have now advertised.”
The haunted house had advertised other horrors just as cruel and inappropriate, including botched abortions and other shootings. Unfortunately, this isn’t the only incidence of its kind; Christian communities have long used Halloween haunted houses to depict the “sins” of homosexuality, sex, alcohol, and the supposed road to hell.
