Seventy-three-year-old GOP Congresswoman Virginia Foxx is preparing to take on leadership in the House Education and the Workforce Committee, and has vowed to undo all Obama’s accomplishments in education.
In an interview, Foxx stated, “I’m going to push to diminish the role of the federal government in everything it’s in that isn’t in the Constitution. That’s education, health care.” Her unwavering stance on small government stems from her upbringing: she grew up without power or running water, and began working to support her family at 12 years old. Her success may be impressive, but it has led her to believe that individuals should rely on themselves to rise up, not on federal programs.
This damaging perspective means she hopes to redirect the Title 1 program that funds schools serving poor students, and eliminate regulations on for-profit colleges (which would cut off financial aid programs). She has also criticized the Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights, and its efforts in issues such as campus sexual assault and transgender bathroom rights.
As an old friend of Mike Pence, she is also notoriously anti-LGBT, and has called Matthew Shepard’s murder a “hoax”. We are wishing her the worst in her future endeavors. [Politico]
