The 2000s was a decade filled with groundbreaking LGBTQ television and cinema. From Eating Out and Latter Days to Queer as Folk and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. But no piece of media was quite as absurd, offensive, and hilarious as Another Gay Movie.
The film set out to parody popular teen comedies like American Pie, but flipped the script, and, unlike your average teen comedy, focused on a group of gay friends instead. The cast included the then-unknown Michael Carbonaro, and supporting roles were filled by some of the queer community’s favorite stars, like Graham Norton, Lypsinka, and the comedian, Ant. Upon release, The Advocate said the film was “Pushing queer cinema into taboo-busting new territory!”
The new 15th Anniversary release will be a director’s cut filled with never-before-seen footage, including the now-infamous Mink Stole bathroom scene that parodied Coco Peru’s famous scene in TRICK. Director Todd Stephens said in a statement, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to unleash ANOTHER GAY MOVIE back on the world. It now includes a brilliantly twisted scene with my idol, Mink Stole, that I never should have cut in the first place.” The Director’s Cut will also feature more scenes featuring music from the band Barcelona, and more.
It will be interesting to see how a new generation of viewers interpret Another Gay Movie. So much has changed since its release in 2006. Gay marriage is now legal. Offensive humor is now seen as crude, and films about LGBTQ people are now mainstream, but the spirit, comedy, and life of Another Gay Movie is hopefully one that can still be enjoyed by everyone.
The new 15th Anniversary Director’s Cut will launch on VOD (including iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu) on April 27th, followed by a DVD release on May 4th.
