Netflix has debuted their first ever gay romance reality television series called “The Boyfriend.” The LGBTQ+ inclusive show is set in a beach house on Tateyama, Japan, which the show dubs the “Green Room.” Here, cameras follow nine men from different career and life backgrounds on a month-long journey to find love and develop new friendships.
The trailer reveals that the nine men are housed together on a beach for one month and given the task of managing a coffee truck to help bond them as they get to know one another. It also reveals relationships and friendships unfolding between various participants as they spend four weeks together.
“The Boyfriend” joins a growing list of popular reality dating series that the public just can’t seem to get enough. Franchises like “The Bachelor,” “Love Island,” “Love Is Blind” and “Love on the Spectrum,” have earned dedicated followings, but a same-sex franchise has yet to be seen until now.
Marie Claire claims that the show sets itself apart by offering viewers a heartier slice of authenticity than other more scripted and structured series. And some content gets heavy and real, with contestants evening being seen contemplating coming out to their families in the trailer.
The nine participating men are aged 22 to 36 and spread across a range of careers including dance, IT, makeup, cuisine, modeling and more.
Viewers are excited to see beautiful queer representation on their screens, and the ten episodes that comprise season one of The Boyfriend are available now for your binging pleasure.
