American Psychiatric Association Eliminates Gender Indentity Disorder

When doctors around the nation (and the world) receive the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders from the American Psychiatric Assocation in May, 2013, they will not only notice that the terms “dyslexia” and “Asperger’s” have been eliminated, but that there is no longer a “gender identity disorder.” The new edition, instead, will refer to GID as “gender dysphoria,” removing the negative stigma associated with the word disorder. The change was officially approved this weekend. Since 1975, the American Psychiatric Association has declassified gay and lesbian as a disorder. [QT]
