With the appointment of Tammy S. Smith to Army Brigadier General, the US military has made history. Smith is now the highest-ranking openly gay service member in the US military, and this is also the first time she is publicly acknowledging her sexuality. Her wife, Tracey Hepner (left), co-founded the Military Partners and Families Coalition, a key voice in the debate over benefits and military programs for same-sex partners. [The Atlantic]
Smith told Stars and Stripes that her promotion is both exciting and humbling, saying it gives her a chance to be a leader in advancing Army values and excellence. She feels that the fact she is a lesbian does not need to be the focus or relevant to her position, and what is relevant is upholding Army values and the responsibility this carries.
