One of the biggest outings in television history is about to take place, and it’s a cartoon. The Simpsons show runner, Al Jean, hinted that Waylon Smithers is going to finally reveal he is gay to his money-grubbing, Republican boss, Mr Burns. It’s been a storyline in the making for over 26 seasons, and his orientation will finally be discussed in two episodes in the 27th season that premiered last night.

“In Springfield now, most people know he’s gay, but obviously Burns doesn’t…We deal with that in two episodes,” Jean said. “We actually do a lot with Smithers this year. He gets fed up with Burns not appreciating him and considers his options.”

The cartoon’s director, David Silverman, discussed Smithers’ sexuality in 2007 saying that the “cat’s almost out of the bag”  and that he’s “Burns-sexual,” in reference to the numerous hints that Smithers has always loved his sometimes-abusive boss. [TheGuardian]
