Rent’s Anthony Rapp to Join Star Trek Crew as First Originally Gay Character

Some major casting announcements have been made for the new Star Trek Discovery show, filling the decks with some unexpected characters. Of note is Anthony Rapp who starred in the original Broadway production of RENT. The actor will play Lt. Stamets, the ship’s first originally gay character. (We’re ignoring the controversial move to out Lt. Sulu in the movie Star Trek Beyond.) Rapp’s character is said to be an astromycologist or fungus expert (for us normal earthlings).

Michelle Yeoh (Marco Polo) and Doug Jones (Hocus Pocus zombie, a Gentleman on Buffy!!, and Fallen Skies) are both on board the Voyager. [Yahoo]
