While the World Cup is making strides to try and protect LGBT fans and participants with things like a Pride House, some anti-LGBT Russians are threatening to hurt, and even kill, gay football fans who come to the World Cup. An organization called Pride in Football, an alliance of GLBT fans, has been reporting death threats to local authorities. One of the e-mails being reported allegedly says that gay people will be “hunted down and stabbed.” Pride in Football’s Joe White said that he is taking all of threats seriously.
“We’ve had people say that if they find us they’ll stab us, so it’s been a mixture but they’re being dealt with seriously and those investigations are still ongoing,” he said.
The Football Supporters Federation has already warned LGBT fans to not openly display affection.
