AP in Trouble Over Leaked Gay Husband/Wife Memo

An internal memo sent out to Associated Press employees shows that the AP Style Guide rules concerning legally married gays and lesbians is entirely unequal and offensive. In the first of two memos from the AP Standards, Tom Kent and Dave Minthorn wrote to employees: “SAME-SEX COUPLES: We were asked how to report about same-sex couples who call themselves ‘husband’ and ‘wife.’ Our view is that such terms may be used in AP stories with attribution. Generally AP uses couples or partners to describe people in civil unions or same-sex marriages.” This policy, if carried out and included in the AP Style Book, would be detrimental for the marriage equality movement. If the national media continues to refer to legally married gay couples as merely partners or couples than we will never be looked at as entirely equal to the general public. [Gawker]
