Boy Scouts Changes Name to Reflect New Diversity

The Boy Scouts of America is dropping the word boy from their name. Now that girls can become members, the organization felt it necessary to have the name reflect this and become more inclusive. Scouts BSA allows girls who want to take part, but the Girls Scouts of America aren’t impressed.

“Girl Scouts is the premier leadership development organization for girls,” Sylvia Acevedo, CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA, said in a statement. “We are, and will remain, the first choice for girls and parents.”

Scouts BSA is hoping to recover from declining numbers, and they also unveiled a new campaign “Scout Me In” that will work to promote inclusivity. “As we enter a new era for our organization, it is important that all youth can see themselves in Scouting in every way possible,” CEO of Scouts BSA said.

Change happened rather rapidly for the once conservative organization. In 2015 it ended its ban on gay leaders, and said this year that it would allow transgender boys and girls.
