A 69-year-old British man is being held in a Moroccan prison after he was suspected of engaging in homosexuality. Ray Cole was in the country visiting a Moroccan man, Jamal Jam Wald Nass, but when two were at a bus station together, they were approached by police officers who arrested and jailed the pair on suspicions of homosexuality. Cole has been in jail since September 18 in conditions that has his family, including his son, fearing for his safety. The authorities have sentenced them to four months in prison based on evidence attained from Cole’s cell phone that showed the two together.
The four month sentence is light in comparison to the country’s strict laws against homosexuality that could place those accused in jail for three years. [Mirror]
