Canada’s House of Commons Approves Bill to End Transgender Discrimination

There was a big victory for the LGBT community today as the House of Commons in Canada voted 149-137 to approve a bill that would make it illegal to discriminate against transgender individuals. The bill was able t pass thanks to the support of 18 Conservatives, including four cabinet ministers. “Today, New Democrats are proud to have contributed to ensuring equal protection under the law from discrimination and hatred based on gender identity,” New Democrat Randall Garrison said in a statement after the vote. Adding: “Transgender and transsexual citizens are among the most marginalized and are too often victims of harassment and acts of violence.” [CBC]
