Alex Clare (full name Alexander George Clare) is a British singer-songwriter from Southwark, London. His music styles include soul, electronic and dubstep, which originated in South London in the late 1990s.
The 26-year old’s debut album The Lateness of the Hour was released in the UK last July. Opening song “Up All Night” is great example of how his three music styles mix well together; jazzy lyrics with the electronic instrumental drums and waves of base, and choruses of dubstep. Clare put what the song is about in a very simple way on his website, “It’s about going on a bender!”
“Relaxed My Beloved” has a very interesting sound. Electronic jazz-inspired drums and strings back up the mellow lyrics; picture the male Adele for the lyrics. “That one’s about realizing that someone needs words of comfort. Only you can’t be passive with them because, you always end up exploding,” Clare said.
Clare believes that, ultimately, music is about space and time. “All you need in a song is the bass, the kick and the snare. The rest is just commentary…There are so many sounds you can put on a song,” he added. “But you just end up filling up space and music needs space. Listen to John Coltrane! It’s all about quality, not quantity.”

This fall he will be touring the UK, Germany, Czech Republic and Austria in October. He said he loves touring, having played in musically inspired locations such as New Orleans and Jamaica, “Touring and playing every night would be the dream for me.”
Recently Clare’s song “Too Close” was featured in a commercial Internet Explorer 9, which helped his popularity. The song debuted at #68 on the US Billboard Hot 100, reached #1 on the German charts, and last month it peaked at #4 on the UK Singles Chart.
