John Grant and Villagers are two acts to watch at New York’s CMJ this year. These two are bound to leave you humming long after the venues clear out. Plus, it’s always nice to hear boys sing about other boys.
Singer-songwriter John Grant is on a brief U.S. tour away from his native Iceland, and he’s putting on shows this week that New Yorkers shouldn’t miss out on. Grant’s first set was at Rough Trade’s day party on Thursday (10/5), which doubled as an album release party for his highly-anticipated new record, Grey Tickles, Black Pressure. A vocal powerhouse, Grant only becomes more fine tuned with time.
Following a tour with Grizzly Bear, Villager’s sophomore album, Awayland, shot to No. 1 on the Irish charts and No. 16 in the UK albums chart. Darling Arithmetic is the third album from Irish folk band Villagers, fronted by lead singer Conor O’Brien. Written, recorded, produced, and mixed at home on a simple 16-track, O’Brien draws listeners in with raw emotions and honest songwriting.
Catch John Grant and Villagers on Saturday (10/17) at Le Poisson Rouge in Greenwich Village for their last sets of CMJ 2015. Tickets are still available.
