Costa Rican Court Rules Citizens Can Change Gender on Official Documents

The Costa Rica Supreme Electoral Court ruled that citizens are allowed to change their gender on official government documents. The ruling on Monday means that despite what gender a person is at birth documents will no longer include gender at birth in order to avoid discrimination or stigma if a person were to transition.

Costa Rica has led the way in transgender rights. In 2013, they allowed transgender people to change their names on official documents.
