This week, some gay activists and those in the LGBT community in Dallas expressed outrage over an announcement from organizers that reminded participants to refrain from nudity and lewd behavior while stressing the importance of the 30th Pride to be family-friendly. Indecent behavior, the Dallas Tavern Guild who puts on the parade said, will not be tolerated and could result in felony charges if committed in front of children. But after a scathing commentary by Daniel Cates from GetEQUAL TX, the Guild quickly put the blame on law enforcement for the new rules, not the organization. “The ‘queer’ is effectively being erased from our Pride celebration in favor of the most polished, heteronormative representation of our community as possible,” Cates wrote. “It should be noted that the rioters at the Stonewall Inn fought to break OUT of the damn closet! Our movement was built of sex positivity and our desire to BE WHO WE ARE! I urge you ALL to openly DEFY the Tavern Guild!” Accusations have been flying across the Internet claiming that Pride has become more about pleasing sponsorships and not offending the increasing number of straight people attending Pride.
We had the pleasure of attending Dallas Pride a few years ago, we couldn’t help but think just how tame the parade actually was in comparison to other Prides around the world. We don’t think Dallas is going to find it to hard to keep it in their pants for a day.
