Following a viral cell-phone video featuring the beating of a 15-year-old gay student in Ohio earlier this year, Union-Scioto Superintendent Dwight Garrett said he would make a decision about the district’s anti-bullying policy by the end of 2011. Almost 90,000 people have signed an online petition campaign through Change.org asking the school district to add sexual orientation and gender identity to their anti-bullying policy.

As the end of December draws close, Garrett has yet to honor his word by announcing a change in the policy. “The Union-Scioto community deserves an answer from the school district as promised. We all hope they do the right thing and add sexual orientation and gender identity to their anti-bullying policy,” said Bret Thompson, who began the Change.org petition.

To express your support for this cause, you can still sign the petition here. Make your voice heard and stand up for the protection of LGBT students in the classroom.
