Democrats to Vote on Marriage Equality as Party Platform This Weekend

In a statement that echoes an interview with US Congressman Barney Frank in July, the Democratic Party has announced its support for marriage equality as an official part of the party’s platform. The proposal, which will go before the Democratic Platform Committee for approval this weekend, denounces both federal and state constitutional amendments to deny same-sex couples the right to marry. While the announcement clearly states the party’s endorsement of marriage equality, it notes that the party respects and recognizes the “freedom of churches and religious entities to decide how to administer marriage as a religious sacrament without government interference.”

On the heels of President Obama’s announcement that he supports same-sex marriage and immediately following Rep. Barney Frank’s marriage to his longtime partner, this commitment from the Democratic Party comes as a welcome addition to the arsenal of those crusading for the right for all Americans to marry.
