A gay man who was the victim of clerical sexual abuse has claimed that the Pope told him that being gay “does not matter.” Juan Carlos Cruz is a survivor of abuse from a Chilean priest who was in the Vatican to discuss his sexuality and the abuse e suffered.
According to Cruz, the Pope said: “You know Juan Carlos, that does not matter. God made you like this. God loves you like this. The Pope loves you like this and you should love yourself and not worry about what people say.”
If the account of the conversation is true, the Pope’s statement marks a major turn in Roman Catholic traditional doctrine.
“We do not normally comment on the Pope’s private conversations,” a spokesperson said.
