While Disneyland California and Disney World Orlando have been hosting unofficial LGBT Pride events for decades, Disneyland Paris will be the first resort to host a sanctioned pride day. Magical Pride will take place on June 1, 2019, and it will host numerous events including a “Magical March of Diversity” parade, musical acts (not yet announced), and plenty of rainbow Disney merchandise to purchase.
Magical Pride, though, isn’t a brand-new event at Europe’s only Disney park, it actually had its beginnings in 2014. Now, though, it officially gets the seal of approval from Disney corporate.
“Dress like a dream, feel fabulous and experience Walt Disney Studios Park like never before – loud, proud and alive with all the colors of the rainbow,” reads the Disneyland Paris website.
Some, though, aren’t so impressed with Disney’s late entry into the world of attracting LGBT travelers.
According to Orlando Weekly in an article titled “Disneyland Paris decides gay dollars are OK dollars with official Pride event,” the author wryly writes: “Considering the way Disney has pretended not to notice the source of the tidal wave of cash flowing their way from the thousands of red-shirted attendees lo these many decades…we think it’s pretty cool that Le House du Mouse is stepping up.”
That’s not to say that Disney hasn’t supported LGBT rights in the past. The company has often sponsored Pride celebrations and even launched their very own rainbow Mickey Ears last year.
