The Episcopal Church, one of America’s largest Christian churches, may be the first to approve same-sex marriage rites. The church, which has a following of over 2 million people, passed the “Witnessing and Blessing of a Lifelong Covenant rite” on July 9 and plans to put it into full effect in December. The church has slowly been moving toward this place since it first approved of a gay bishop, Gene Robinson, nine years ago. Ever since, the church has grown more and more LGBT-friendly, allowing gay men and lesbians to join the ministry. Recently, they also started approving proposals from transgender people as candidates for minister positions. [GayStarNews]
