I remember waiting in line for over an hour to play the original Mortal Kombat at my local arcade, choosing my favorite character Sonya, getting made fun of by my brother, but then ultimately demolishing him (sealing the deal wither her Fatality). We became obsessed with the characters’ backstories when the game became available on Sega Genesis, and were first to see the movie in theaters. Now, the game franchise has released the characters in the latest installment, Mortal Kombat X, and it includes a gay character—my how times have changed.
Kung Jin has been confirmed by the game’s cinematic director, to be the first gay character.
Kotaku explains how the revelation occurs in the game. In a flashback clip: “Raiden says, ‘Self-loathing has always been an unfortunate part of your make-up.’ Later, after the thunder god tries to get Kung Jin to follow in his ancestors’ footsteps and become a warrior monk, Kung Jin says, ‘I can’t… They won’t accept..’ Raiden—who knows what the young mortal’s talking about because, well, he’s a god—replies by saying, ‘They care about only what is in your heart; not whom your heart desires.’
