Gay Marriage On The Way for Washington State

Image via Passport

Last night the Washington State Senate passed the marriage equality bill, paving the way for same-sex marriage. The vote passed easily 28-21 and received no unnecessary amendments attached to it. The next step for the bill is to move to the Washington State House, where it is also expected to pass easily, and then onto Gov. Chris Gregoire’s desk, and she has stated she will sign the bill into law. When this happens, Washington will be the seventh state where lesbian and gay marriage is legal (the other states with gay marriage are Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Iowa, Connecticut, New York). After, Gregoire signs the marriage equality bill into law, it can still be repealed, but the opposition will have to wait for the bill to be passed into law, and need 120,577 signatures by June 6. If the opposition succeeds in gathering all the signatures, which some fear will be easy for NOM, same-sex marriage can be on the ballot for November, and gay and lesbian couples will have to wait until then.
