It was back in 2001 when a business-minded cowboy from Texas set his sights on Denver, and he quickly became one of the city’s proud aficionados. Carl Schmidt II owns the Capitol Hill Mansion Bed & Breakfast (1207 Pennsylvania St. Tel:, an 1891 Victorian mansion that he converted into an award-winning, eight-room, three-suite inn in the heart of town.

Alongside his daughter Bailey, Schmidt welcomes travelers eager for a personal introduction to his adopted hometown. In between serving gourmet breakfasts by morning and hosting wine and beer socials each evening, Bailey doles out tips for everything from romantic dinners to local-brewery tours. When he’s not sharing keys to the city with his contented guests, you may find Schmidt coordinating a Colorado Gay Rodeo Association event, or chilling in his cowboy hat at gay country bar Charlie’s.
