Gays and lesbians who wish to seek asylum in the United Kingdom to avoid persecution in their home countries must first “prove” their sexuality, according to MPs. The rigorous testing system for which those seeking asylum must adhere to is being described by the gay-rights organization Stonewall as “distressing” after claimants revealed that some seeking asylum have handed over photographic evidence and video footage of “highly personal sexual activity” in order to ensure that they were granted asylum. According to a recently released report: “The battleground is now firmly centered in ‘proving’ that they are gay. In turn, this has led to claimants going to extreme lengths to try and meet the new demands of credibility assessment in this area, including the submission of photographic and video evidence of highly personal sexual activity to caseworkers, presenting officers and the judiciary.” The report not only angered the gay community, but also politicians like Labour MP Keith Vaz who told BBC News: “It is absurd for a judge or a caseworker to have to ask an individual to prove that they are lesbian or gay, to ask them what kind of films they watch, what kind of material they read.” [Independent]
