NYC Pride, the official host of WorldPride 2019 | Stonewall 50, has announced legendary Saturday headliner Grace Jones, along with Teyana Taylor, Pabllo Vittar, and more for Pride Island 2019.
Pride Island is the multi-day live musical event featuring performances that will take place from Saturday, June 29 to Sunday, June 30, 2019 at Pier 97 in New York City. Sunday’s headliner will be announced at a later date.
Grace Jones, an acclaimed singer, songwriter, and actress, was born in Jamaica before relocating to Syracuse, NY with her family. She began her successful career as a model in NYC and Paris and, in1977, secured her first record deal which resulted in a string of dance-club hits, including “I Need A Man,” and her acclaimed reinvention of Edith Piaf’s classic, “La Vie En Rose.” Jones is most famously known for her post-disco dance track “Pull Up to the Bumper,” and an array of features in motion pictures including “Conan the Destroyer,” “Vamp,” and the 1992 classic, “Boomerang.”
“I couldn’t be more excited to perform in front of my LGBTQIA+ friends and the community that’s supported me for so many years during WorldPride 2019 | Stonewall 50,” said Jones. “Saturday’s Pride Island lineup will be a celebration of everything that the community stands for and will go down in illustrious history.”
Also set to take the stage is Brazil’s most famous drag queen Pabllo Vittar. In the past two years, the “Sua Cara” singer has been nominated for multiple awards, including a Latin Grammy in 2018, making her the first drag queen to be nominated. She was also nominated as the “Best Brazilian Act” for the 2018 MTV Europe Music Awards.
More announcements to come for Sunday’s performance (the night after the parade).
