Hugh Hefner died of natural causes at the Playboy mansion in Los Angeles. Hefner began Playboy in 1953 for just $8,000 and it soon became one of the most iconic and recognizable brands in the world.
Hefner considered himself to be a feminist, and often championed civil rights and gay rights (supporting gay and lesbian marriage).
“Today, in every instance of sexual rights falling under attack, you’ll find legislation forced into place by people who practice discrimination disguised as religious freedom,” he wrote. “If these zealots have their way, our hard-won sexual liberation — women’s rights, reproductive rights and rights to privacy — lie in peril,” he wrote.
