For almost two decades artists from over 40 nations have been converging on a small town in Austria to compete for World Champion titles in body painting at the The World Bodypainting Festival. The Championships are the center of many creative projects over the one-week festival that attracts up to 30,000 visitors. While few knew much about body painting 20 years ago, the WBF has proved to be the catalyst for the explosion in numbers and quality of artists who now call themselves body painters. With its long tradition the WBF is considered the founder of the modern body painting art movement. At the center of Festival, which took place last weekend, is an outdoor festival called “Bodypaint City” where visitors are welcomed by hundreds of performers and models being painted live on the festival grounds. There were live performance, street performance, huge stage acts, and installation art. But the main show had countries competing for the top prize.

Riina Laine from Finland came out on top, and in the Special Effects category Gabriela Hajek-Renner from Austria brought back a world championship. In the airbrush category artist Alex Hansen from Brazil won first place taking home a trophy that he had coincidentally also designed for the competition.

Check out a whole lot more creative work after the jump…
