Times are definitely changing in the music industry as more and more artists are unafraid to be their true selves. We may be able to thank the loss of control from the studios thanks to the rise of social media or society’s general acceptance, but the announcement yesterday that singer Keke Palmer is bisexual is a testament to the changing music-industry landscape.
Palmer hinted at her sexual fluidity in her video for “I Don’t Belong to You” that showed the singer leaving her boyfriend for a woman—R&B singer Cassie.
But, in an honest upfront with People magazine, she divulged how she feels about her sexuality. ‘The video was to represent the young woman today – it’s not the traditional woman anymore – and not the specifics of “Am I gay? Am I straight? Am I bi?”‘ the 22-year-old said. “I’m making the rules for myself, and I don’t have to be stuck down to one label.”
“I don’t feel the need to define nothin’ to nobody, because I’m always changing. Why say that I’m this or that when I might not be tomorrow? ‘I’m gonna follow my own feelings and my own heart.”
