Famed British actor Sir Ian McKellen had some advice for India over its antiquated reinstitution of colonial-era buggery laws…”grow up.”

The actor chatted with Mumbai Mirror about how far Britain has come in the acceptance of LGBT people and compared it to how far India still hast to go. Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code was once ruled unconstitutional by a lower court in 2009, but then reversed by a higher court, thus keeping the anti-gay-sex law intact. Indians can face up to ten years in prison as a result.

“It is appalling and ironical that India would use a colonial law to oppress its homosexuals,’ McKellen told the Mumbai Mirror. “India needs to grow up. India needs to realize that it doesn’t need to follow British laws anymore.”
